Issue #10 – It Takes a Village

There are so many non-profit organizations in Las Vegas that do wonderful things for our community. But it takes the efforts of a lot of people coming together to make the difference they make possible. Circles Magazine wanted to give a few of these organizations the opportunity to say “Thank You” to someone that they feel has made a difference not only to them but to the community.

Easter Seals Nevada

Easter Seals Nevada thanks Michael Woodfield, from Bank of Nevada, for his dedication and support to children and adults with disabilities. As a member of the Board of Directors, Michael is a true example of giving tirelessly from simply helping provide items for a Thanksgiving meal for adult day program clients to encouraging his peers to support Easter Seals Nevada in any way they can. Michael sets a wonderful example of the spirit of giving and shows compassion and kindness to Easter Seals Nevada staff, clients and families. We are truly grateful to have this amazing community partner and friend as part of our organization and we are proud to name Michael as our “unsung hero”.

Nevada PEP

Taylor Barton is an unsung hero and a true champion when it comes to promoting bullying prevention. Taylor knows about bullying, he has walked in the shoes as a target of bullying. That is why he partnered with PEP and took some huge STEPS with PEP to STOP bullying at the Run, Walk, and Roll event for the past two years. Taylor’s firsthand experience as a young student who was bullied gives him remarkable insight into the long term effects of bullying. He follows his passion to help prevent negative outcomes through his good works at the Taylor Barton Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to educate, advocate on behalf of, and empower young people around the issues of bullying. Taylor advocates for bullying prevention in our schools to create a safe learning environment for all children. He is a true leader in our community.

Special Olympics Nevada

If our athletes are WHY we exist then our volunteers are surely HOW we exist. They share their time, talent and their treasure to make a difference and they become trusted friends. Our UNSUNG HERO for 2012 is a woman who sought us out and we are so very grateful that she did. Elize Bravo always believed in volunteering and giving back and for the past several years, she’s been a force to be reckoned with as an advocate for our children. She makes a difference every day in so many ways. She is our HERO and the athletes and staff of Special Olympics Nevada agree: ELIZE ROCKS!
