When walking out of that yoga or group exercise class you think, “Where to next? I can’t possibly be caught dead with my gym clothes on”! You cancel dates, luncheons, and more due to your ugly workout gear. If you think there is no hope, we’re here to give you great news! Yoga clothing has become not only stylish, but mainstream for many venues and occasions. By choosing the right clothes you can go from working out to going out easily, comfortably, and confidently!

What is yoga?

Yoga is a series of physical and mental exercises that helps your muscles create better upper and lower body strength and flexibility. There are 100’s of different places you can study yoga around the country. One of the most popular types of yoga practiced in America is the Hatha yoga. The definition of yoga is “to join or yoke together”. It brings together 3 main aspects of our being: the mind, body, and spirit. Yoga was originally developed in India around 5000 years ago.

Physical and Mental Benefits of Yoga

Some of the known physical benefits you get from doing yoga include improving your strength, flexibility, and balance, while increasing coordination and gross motor skills. Certain styles of yoga can improve your strength and muscle tone, such as “ashtanga” and power yoga. Other styles can help a person’s flexibility and balance by stretching your muscles and soft body tissues. Certain poses (also called “asanas”) may include stretching your ligaments as well as your muscle tendons. Because breathing is so important during yoga, requiring the participant to pay close attention to slowly and completely inhaling and exhaling, it can improve breathing for people who have problems in that area. Results can be dramatic in just a short time with dedicated yoga practice. Even 15 minutes a day will create a change in your body. Yoga also greatly benefits our mental and spiritual health. It relaxes the mind opening us up to receive information more easily, improving our memory, and increasing our ability to focus for longer periods of time. Having a calm approach to life changes our attitude towards others, makes us more aware of our surroundings, and reduces anxiety. Perhaps the biggest benefit to practicing yoga regularly is becoming more aware of who we are, or self-realization.
